- Description
- Soil organic C pools are influenced by both the input of organic matter and the microbial degradation of soil C. Soil microorganisms play an integral role in mediating and driving the net C balance in soil. However, the processes and mechanisms that underscore the effect of microorganisms on C dynamics are not well understood. Microbial activity and community structures are highly related to soil physicochemical conditions. Microbial feedback on soil environment through the utilization of C as an energy source leads to alterations of soil C fractions. In this chapter, we first address the significant roles of soil microorganisms on soil organic C dynamics in relation to their functions. Then, we examine the relationship between the microbial community in terms of their activity, composition, and biomass, and the spatial accessibility of organic substrates to soil microorganisms. We also evaluate recent researches focusing on how soil microbiota regulate C loading and organic matter decomposition, studying their implications for soil C sequestration and long-term management. Finally, we suggest some future research that, in particular, should underpin the molecular mechanisms of C turnover in soils.
